25 Prompts to Make Journal Writing A Breeze

You’re standing in the stationery section deciding on the perfect journal to buy.  Flowers or puppies.  Lined or blank.  Coil or perfect bound.  Hmm… so many decisions.  Finally you pick one.  You bring it home and crack open the cover.  Clean crisp pages.  The perfect pen.  A new chapter awaits.

But, that blank page is daunting.  It’s staring back at you waiting for that first stroke of brilliance.

You think you have nothing to say.  You aren’t a ‘writer’.  What if it sounds cheesy?  What if you make a mistake?  What if you write down what you really feel?  Dear god… please not the truth.

I hear you.  With every new journal, I have similar thoughts.

Except I’ve discovered that journal writing, like life, is about the process, not the end product. It’s the art of releasing thoughts from you, not necessarily creating a masterpiece. (although you just might!)

Journaling helps clear your mind, find solutions, let go of past hurts, free you from overwhelm and frame your day. It’s creative and powerful.

So why is it so tough? Well, because it’s free-form.  Nobody is telling you what to write.  As liberating as that may sound, for some people, that’s an obstacle.  So let me help you.

Here are 25 journaling prompts to get that ink flowing:

They are grouped into 4 categories depending on when in the day you write and what is going on.  Pick from any category.

STARTING MY DAY

1. What I’m looking forward to today is…
2. The three most important things to get done today are…
3. What I love about my life today is…
4. When I encounter X (define what or who X is) I will choose to…
5. The promise I make to myself today is…
6. The person I choose to be today is…

ON CHALLENGING DAYS

1. Right now I am feeling…
2. If I could change what happened today, I would…
3. Knowing that, tomorrow I will…
4. What I wish I would have said to person X is…
5. The person I forgive is…
6. I re-frame this situation by believing that…

DESIGNING MY IDEAL LIFE

1. When my life is ideal I am…
2.One of my favourite things to do is…
3. I am inspired by…
4. Success to me means…
5. I am happiest when I…
6. What brings me peace is…

REFLECTING ON MY DAY

1. What I loved about today was…
2. What disappointed or upset me today was…
3. Today I celebrate that I accomplished…
4. What I discovered about myself today was…
5. Today I am so happy and grateful for…
6. While I sleep tonight, I ask the Universe to take care of…
7. The person I send extra love and compassion to today is…
8. What the Universe is reflecting to me is…

My invitation is that you pick one prompt from the entire list.  Answer it in your journal.  Then go back and pick another one that resonates.  Keep picking prompts and answering them for 10 or 15 minutes.  When you are done, close your journal, thank it and put it aside until tomorrow.  The next day, answer the same prompt or another one.  Or write whatever shows up in your awareness to release.

Here are 7 other journaling tips:

1.  Write at the same time every day.  Ironically, structure liberates us.
2. Set a timer and keep writing until the timer goes off.
3. Don’t worry about grammar.  Write full sentences or short phrases or single words.
4. Do it messy – if you make a mistake, cross out the word and keep going.
5. If words don’t come to you, draw pictures instead.  Stick people allowed!
6. Don’t judge.  Just write.  Don’t even read what you write.
7. When you’re done, close the book in gratitude.

Do this every day for a month.  Notice how grounded you feel.  It’s the cheapest form of therapy out there.  And the value… priceless.

Keep sparkling my friend.  You matter.

Love,
Paula
